Frequently Asked Questions

How can I set up a Transportation program for my employees?

It can be as simple as providing a common area where there are transportation recourses available such as local bus and train schedules. Or as advanced as providing your employees with tax deferred monies for transit and a shuttle to pick them up and bring them to your door, it is completely up to you. For great tips, please see How to Build a Great Commute Program for Your Employees

What is a vanpool?

A vanpool brings employees from a common origin to the workplace. The van can be leased by the company, or more often, by a volunteer from the group. Volunteers from the vanpool group do the driving. The fare is determined by splitting the cost of the vanpool lease and gas among the riders. The riders usually meet the van at a predetermined time and place each morning, as home pickups tend to be too time consuming to be practical. A vanpool gets to the place of employment at a specific time each morning and leaves at a predetermined time each evening. As such, vans are best used in situations were there are specific shifts or agreed upon times that the vanpool group can arrive at and leave work.

How can I get my employer to join Emergency Ride Home?

Unfortunately, you cannot force your boss into starting a new program. You can, however, provide her or him with information about the program, the benefits it will bring to the company, and a sense of how desired it is by employees. If you prefer to remain anonymous or would like some support when you do approach your employer, call the Alliance. Our outreach team regularly mails out information and meets with employers to help them improve their transportation program. Just send us a contact name, number and address and we will be happy to contact them for you.

For more information, please set up a consultation with the Alliance by calling us at 650-588-8170 or send an email to alliance@commute.org.
