New Bike Education Program Launches in San Mateo County

Commute.org is committed to promoting sustainable transportation options that benefit both our community and the environment. In partnership with Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC), we are excited to announce a comprehensive bike education program aimed at empowering San Mateo County residents with the knowledge and skills to ride safely and confidently. This two-year pilot program is made possible through a generous grant from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (SMCTA), utilizing Measure A and Measure W funds, along with additional resources from the City/County Association of Governments (C/CAG). Together, we are offering a variety of training sessions and educational resources designed to enhance biking skills, improve safety, and encourage sustainable travel.

SVBC, as the education provider, will schedule and offer classes to communities across San Mateo County. Experienced instructors are eager to make bike riding for transportation an option for many more community members. All classes are free and will be offered on an ongoing basis for at least the next two years. The course will cover basic to advanced topics. Below are course offerings:

• General Education: 1 hour online or in-person
• Learn to Ride: Ages 14+
• Basic Bike Maintenance: In person with bike
• Smart Cycling Part 1: A 3-hour online course covering safe strategies for biking on the street
• Smart Cycling Part 2: A 6-hour in-person course with bike practicing safe strategies

• Bicycle Security: Sunday, May 11, 10:00am, online

New courses will be added over time, so be sure to check SVBC’s website for the latest schedule and to sign up for classes.

In addition to rider education, SVBC is also recruiting candidates for League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certification. This includes a three-day seminar that prepares participants to teach bike safety courses. Successful candidates will earn their LCI certification and become eligible for paid instructor positions throughout the region. Are you passionate about biking and teaching?
