From April 1 to May 31, we received 1,542 pledges from commuters to take a sustainable commute to or from San Mateo County to get to work or college.
The pledge results highlight the multimodal nature of commuting in our region, with 66% choosing public transit, and many also selecting walking (42%), bicycling (41%), remote work (41%), shuttles (30%), and carpooling/vanpooling (29%)—demonstrating a strong commitment to flexible and sustainable travel choices.

We were blown away by the thoughtful and inspiring quotes we received from pledgers about why they chose a sustainable commute. Their stories reflect a wide range of personal motivations—from improving mental health and saving money to reducing traffic congestion and living more sustainably.
It’s clear that while raffle prizes and rewards are great perks, the real win is in the everyday benefits participants experience—like improved mental clarity, reduced stress, meaningful connections, and healthier routines. These pledges remind us that sustainable commuting isn’t just about the destination—it’s about the journey.
CommuteStar Stats:
From April 1 to May 31, 2025, 1,237 CommuteStar participants logged 34,417 sustainable trips, covering 539,393.4 miles without driving alone, saving 150.5 tons of CO₂, and burning 4.2 million calories. This collective effort not only helped reduce emissions and protect air quality, but also eased traffic congestion and promoted healthier, more active lifestyles throughout San Mateo County.
