Pledge Summary

This year we asked commuters to pledge to use a sustainable commute for a chance to win $250 and transform their commute

This year’s San Mateo Commuter Challenge saw an impressive 1,846 number of pledge submissions. These pledgers embraced various sustainable commuting modes, including biking (15%), walking (15%), carpooling/vanpooling (13%), and using public transit (23%). Our participants hailed from numerous home cities, with the top three being San Francisco, San Mateo, and Redwood City, and commuted to key work locations, with the top three work cities being South San Francisco, Redwood City, and San Francisco. Popular reasons for pledging included reducing carbon footprints, improving personal health, and saving on commuting costs.

Congratulations to our 5 winners, whose dedication to sustainable commuting earned them a well-deserved prize. Winners have been notified and will be announced shortly.

STAR Platform Highlights

In addition to pledging, many participants actively logged their sustainable commutes on our STAR platform for a chance to win weekly prizes. This year, 1,136 users recorded their alternative trips, showcasing their commitment to sustainability. Collectively, these participants logged nearly 34,000 trips, covering an impressive 600,000 miles. The modes of commuting varied widely, with notable entries in biking, walking, carpooling, and public transit.

Our STAR users’ efforts are captured not just in numbers but also in stories of positive impact. We had 50 weekly prize winners, whose names are prominently featured in the word cloud. We will be posting pictures soon of our enthusiastic winners celebrating their contributions to a greener future.
