CommuteStar 2024 Impact Report

At Commute.org, we believe that small changes can lead to big results—especially when it comes to our daily commutes. Every year, we publish the CommuteStar Impact Report to celebrate the collective efforts of our community and showcase the real difference sustainable commuting is making in San Mateo County.

Thanks to the dedication of our CommuteStar members, we’ve achieved some impressive milestones together, as highlighted in the graphic below.

Infographic titled "2024 Impact Report: The Power of Sustainable Commuting" from CommuteStar features a pie chart showing transportation methods and key stats: 9,296 commuters, 1.6M trips, 31.8M miles traveled, 83,872 tons of CO2 reduced, and 102M calories burned.

These achievements represent years of commitment from commuters like you—every trip logged, every time you biked, carpooled, or took public transit instead of driving alone.

How We Commute: The CommuteStar Mode Split

Sustainable commuting isn’t one-size-fits-all—CommuteStar participants use a mix of transportation options to cut down on single-occupancy vehicle trips. The CommuteStar 2024 Impact Report breaks down how our community gets around, illustrating the impact of these choices.

These numbers reinforce the importance of diverse transportation options and the power of small, daily decisions in building a more sustainable future. Whether you’re carpooling with coworkers, hopping on the train, or swapping your drive for a bike ride, your commute plays a vital role in reducing congestion and emissions.

Check out the mode split in our Impact Report to see how your commute compares and get inspired to try a new, sustainable way to travel!

Real-World Benefits of Sustainable Commuting

🌎 Lower Emissions, Cleaner Air – Our collective efforts have reduced CO₂ emissions by 8,372 tons, which is the same as removing 1,800 cars from the road for an entire year or preventing the use of 900,000 gallons of gasoline.

💰 Big Savings for Your Wallet – By choosing sustainable commuting, participants save hundreds—if not thousands—of dollars each year on gas, parking, and vehicle wear-and-tear. That’s money that can go toward travel, savings, or something fun instead of fuel costs!

🔥 Burn More Calories, Feel Healthier102 million calories burned means that people walking and biking as part of their commute are getting fitter while getting to work! That’s the equivalent of burning off 29,000 pounds of cheeseburgers or running 45,000 marathons.
