Have you ever found yourself sitting in traffic, wishing you could turn your daily grind into a more enjoyable experience? Carpooling isn’t just a practical way to cut down on commuting costs—it can also transform your travel time into something much more enjoyable. Imagine sharing the ride with a friendly coworker, laughing about the day ahead, and even earning up to $100 along the way! With October being Carpool Month, it’s the perfect time to explore how carpooling can benefit you and your community.

One easy way to start is by joining the STAR platform, a free tool designed to help San Mateo County commuters find carpool partners, log trips, and earn rewards. Each employer in the county can have their own STAR network, where employees can join and find carpool partners internally. Simply create an account at my.commute.org to get started. If your employer doesn’t have a STAR network yet, Commute.org staff are happy to assist in setting one up. As a public agency, this service is completely free, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the benefits of carpooling.

Carpool on STAR

What Constitutes a Carpool?

A carpool is simply a group of commuters who share rides to work or college. Whether you’re commuting with a coworker, friend, or family member, as long as everyone logs their trips in the STAR platform, you can qualify for rewards. Participants must be 18 or older, and while only one carpool group is needed, each person must have a STAR account to participate.

How to create a carpool?

  1. Go to ‘Trip Planning’ page
  2. Click either
    • ‘Let’s go’ if you do not have a saved commute or
    • ‘Add another commute’ or
    • ‘Edit this commute’ if you want to update a saved commute
  3. Fill in or update your commute details and preferences. Make sure to check ‘carpool or vanpool’
  4. Your carpool has been created or updated and can be managed under your ‘My Pools’ area located on the trip planning page.

Common Barriers and Solutions

It’s natural to have concerns about carpooling, like dealing with scheduling conflicts or trusting new people. Here are a few simple ways to address these worries:

  • Morning Flexibility: The morning is often the easiest time to start a carpool since many have fewer scheduling conflicts. If your after-work plans don’t line up, you can always take transit for the return trip.
  • Open Communication: Build trust by discussing schedules, expectations, and any concerns upfront with your carpool group. Clear communication helps everyone feel at ease.
  • Guaranteed Ride Home Program: Think of this as your commuter insurance. If your carpool falls through, Commute.org will reimburse you up to $60 per ride for Uber, Lyft, or a taxi, up to four times a year, so you’ll always have a backup plan.
  • Just Give It a Try: Start small by carpooling once, and if it works out, aim for 10 trips to earn your first $25 reward. It’s easy, low-risk, and rewarding!
